The Red Sox have apparently decided to lock up the human sound byte machine, signing Dustin Pedroia to a seven year deal worth roughly $100 million dollars, or $14 million per season.
That’s a pretty sizable investment for a guy who turns 30 next month. And, as Chad Finn points out, it’s not without its risks.
But unlike Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford and other folks we’ve laid down huge green for, The Elf is the devil we know–a guy who thrives in this market and plays his balls off. He also routinely ranks among the top 20 players in OBP, hits and runs.
The real payoff, however, comes in the quotes the guy drops, like this one, which was featured over at Baseball Nation.

The only advice we can give Pedey: when carrying all that cash around. Use a money clip. And keep the big bills on the outside.
