Today’s Herald points out that they’re aren’t a lot of players with five World Series rings who never played for the Yankees. In fact, there’s only one. But if the Sox repeat in 2008, Mike Timlin will become a member of this exclusive club.
Who currently holds this distinction? Stuffy McInnis, of course, who was a member of the 1918 Red Sox.
“Wake may have played with him,” said Timlin, referring to 41-year-old knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. “And Schilling may have played with him too.”
So Timlin has a chance to make baseball history in a manner that doesn’t involve killing an opposing player with his bare hands or shiving an ump with a makeshift tobacco spitoon? Bring it on, I say. Bring on the summer.
