We all know that after a grueling three hours of rocking on the bench, begging his offense to come through for him and praying against a Papelbon meltdown, Terry Francona loves to kick back with a steaming vat of Bigelow Green Tea. At least that’s what I surmise from those ads that have been all over EEI since the season began. But now, as if that wasn’t enough, the Bigelow logo pops up during the little recaps of Francona’s interviews on NESN’s SportsDesk. What’s next? Teets sporting a nightcap with the Bigelow logo in the dugout?
Terry, you know I love you madly, but I have a bit of trouble seeing the manager of my team become so closely associated with the Official Drink of Grandpas Everywhere (or ODGE, as it is sometimes known in the UK). Lest we let the competition think you’re halfway to slumberland by the sixth inning, you may want to counterbalance all that tea stuff with a Jaegermeister endorsement. Or how about: “I’m Terry Francona of the Boston Red Sox. And when my team blows a late inning lead, nothing helps take the pain away or fuels an ump-directed tirade like a couple belts of Finlandia Vodka.”
We’re into the second half of the season and the Yanks and Rays are here to party. Time to amp things up, as they say.
