Some smart guy once said: you win 50 games, you lose 50 games, it’s the other 50 that count. I really don’t know if the guy was smart, he could have been a blistering a-hole for all I know. But I agree with the statement. Last night was one of “the other 50.”
Dice-K shut down the Tribe – with a little help from Okajima and Papelbon – and posted zeros across the scoreboard. CC Sabathia shut down the Red Sox – but with a little help from Ben Francisco, the Sox put a run on the board and it was enough. Francisco misread a Mike Lowell pop-up and let it drop for an RBI single. The rest was pitching. The Sox pitchers are currently on a 15-and-two-thirds scoreless inning streak.
Speaking of streaks, there was this time in college after a long afternoon at Punters Pub… Never mind, I wanna mention Julio Lugo’s streak. After an 0-for-33 slump last month, Lugo is riding a career-best 14-game hitting streak. He’s mashing at a .426 clip during the streak and has raised his average from .189 to .226 – can I hear an amen?
Dice-K’s win also leaves the door open for Josh Beckett to become the first 14-game winner in baseball this year. Although it won’t be easy against Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona – could be another duel.
In other news, the Yankees continue to pound crappy teams into submission, all for an outside shot at the wild card. And Bud Selig is 100% sure that he may or may not be at the next Giants game.
