Hey, we won. Coming from behind and everything. Seriously, at the end of the night, we had a bigger number in that crazy box thing than the Orioles had.
But in a way, we lost:
The positive feeling generated by the comeback victory was tempered by the realization that Boston might have to finish the season without outfielder Manny Ramirez, who missed a fourth straight game with a sore left knee.
Boston manager Terry Francona met with Ramirez before the game, and learned that the slugger continues to struggle running and swinging the bat. That left Francona wondering if it might be best to shut down Ramirez for the season.
“I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I do think it’s a possibility,” Francona said. “I hope it’s not the case. It might be the case.”
And by “we”, I meant those who would try to squeeze the last drops of pleasure from the season’s remaining days by watching Manny work his magic.
So tonight we get Beckett in Yankee Stadium. With a bazillion Yanks fans on hand to remind our boys how far we’ve fallen in just a month’s time. I have a feeling that watching this series will be like being awake during surgery on your colon. With Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan doing the play-by-play. And a perpetual-loop video of your girlfriend servicing Pauly Shore and Andy Dick playing in the background.
Oh, and do visit The Lester Project when you have a moment. And hit the MySpace page as well. It’s a very cool fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund in Jon Lester’s name, started by some local college girls. As faithful readers know, Denton and I would do pretty much anything for local college girls. You should, too. A damn fine cause.
