Slowly, quietly, Edgar Renteria has been showing signs of becoming the player Theo and RSN expected when he put on a Red Sox uniform. Last night, or early this morning, he made his statement loud and clear by driving in the game-winning runs in the eighth inning. He’s hitting .291 on the road trip and .298 since April 23rd. Expect this type of production to continue.
Clement’s outing wasn’t as bad as the box score shows. Mantei let up the two runners he inherited in the sixth, those runs charged to Clement. The team was inspired by Clement’s pregame rendition of The Gettysburgh Address in the clubhouse. In other words, please shave that thing off your chin, Matt!
The offense was stagnant, only 4 hits, but the A’s helped out with 11 base on balls (7 of those from Zito) and three errors. The Sox defense looked good, a great snare on the third-base line by Mueller and a nice throw by Payton cut down a runner at the plate.
Today we get some day ball. David Wells will make his first start off the DL against…some Oakland pitcher. Look for the bats to wake up and salvage the series before the team heads home for the baseball travesty known as interleague play.
