He’s only been around for a year but I’ll be damned if Jake Peavy hasn’t grown on me in that time. Yes, his playoff starts were heart attack moments and he hasn’t won a game for us since April. But the guy wears his heart on his sleeve and serves up the kind of quirky behavior — buying duck boats and indoctrinating a cigar store Indian as team mascot — that I’ve always been a sucker for.
Now, as the rumors swirl that he’ll be traded to the Cardinals or some other team in need of a solid fifth starter, much as we were this time last year, he drops this killer quote:
“I love this place. If it happens, I’m certainly prepared for that. I’m not blind to the fact,” he said. “I hope you all aren’t around to see me cry like a baby, because if that day does come, it’s going to be tough for me to look some guys in the eye and know I’m not going to be on their team.”
If today’s game is his last start for us, I hope the guy goes out guns blazing, and finally gets another 2014 win.
If not, I look forward to more caffeinated Peavy exploits at Fenway as we barrel into late July and August.
