The Boston Red Sox were popular winners of last season’s World Series, and also now head in as the favorites to repeat this time around. Punters have been busy as they visit to support them to do so. At present the key challengers in the betting are the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers and of course the New York Yankees.

The Boston Red Sox have long been one of the most storied franchises in World sports, with 14 American league (AL) pennants, and of course nine World series titles to date. The club was founded in 1901, known as the Boston Americans, and was one of eight charter members of the American league. By 1908 the team had officially changed to the name of the Boston Red Sox. Between the early years of 1901 and 1911 the club played at the Huntington Avenue grounds, prior to moving to the famous Fenway Park in 1912. This makes Fenway the oldest ballpark in the major league at present.

The club has always been very successful that saw them pick up the very first World series back in 1903, before winning four more championships in 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. They have had a long list of star players in this period such as Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Smokey Joe Wood and of course Babe Ruth.

The Red Sox through history have been renowned for featuring some of the most talented hitters in the sport. This includes the likes of Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and of course Ted Williams. The latter was the last player to bat above .400 in a season, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. Despite this plethora of star names the Red Sox were unable to win a championship between 1918 and 2004, despite reaching the World series on four occasions.

In 2004 the Red Sox won the World series against St. Louis Cardinals, meaning they finally ended the lengthy wait winning it for the first time in 86 years. Another title followed just three years later as they again landed the World series following a dominant display over the Colorado Rockies.

Following a difficult spell and a completely rebuilt team the Red Sox have now improved no end, and put in a remarkably dominant season last year to cruise to another World series title. This now puts them as the current leading side in the sport, and strong favorites to land their 10 World series title in their history.
