If you root for any team not named the Red Sox, this is about the time you take a look at the standings and start crapping cliches out of your cake hole. It’s only May. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Blah, blah, blah. Here’s the reality: the Red Sox are in first place with the best record in baseball and their offense has not even shown what they can do.
Big Papi started the season in a Lugo-like slump, and he’s leading the team in homers and RBI’s. As soon as he started heating up (raising his .088 to .247), the quest for 500 home runs seems to have penetrated Manny’s world and he is pressing at the plate. Just consider the possibility of the Weapons of Mass Destruction getting in a groove at the same time. Awe-inspiring, isn’t it?
So kick back and enjoy the 31 wins the team has compiled so far. For more fun, look down below them in the AL East standings…lower…keep going…there! The Yankees are down in the sub-basement, hanging on to fifth place only because there isn’t a sixth team in the division. Hank is probably getting ready to flip a coin on who to fire first, Girardi or Cashman, while the rest of George’s minions are working on the Billy Martin robot.
